Kangaroo Island is situated approximately 17km off the mainland of South Australia about 90km from the city centre of Adelaide. By road, the journey from Adelaide to Cape Jervis takes less than two hours passing through the very picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula. From Cape Jervis the crossing over Backstairs Passage by the SeaLink passenger and vehicle ferry takes about 45 minutes. Arrival is at Penneshaw located on the north-eastern end of Kangaroo Island.
Penneshaw offers country town hospitality and is recognized as the gateway to Kangaroo Island.
From Penneshaw there are many interesting and varied attractions to excite tourists including the following:
- Flinders Chase Visitors Centre where the geological story of land formation, creatures and vegetation are graphically displayed.
- Unique coastal weathered formations at Admiral's Arch, the Remarkable Rocks and at Pennington Bay.
- Abundant wildlife and natural bushland settings in the Flinders Chase National Park.
- Up close tours of sea wildlife including sea lions, fur seals and little penguins.
- Spectacular coastline vistas, beautiful bays with white sand beaches, historic lighthouses and ship wreck sites.
- Honey farms where honey from the rare Ligurian bees is produced.
- A eucalyptus distillery, lavender farm, wildlife sanctuaries, sheep cheese factory, fresh water crayfish, local wineries and food outlets.
- Local arts and craft galleries.
Penneshaw is emerging as a prominent arts and craft centre for the island and has well documented stories of its early towns folk and artifacts housed in its museum and visitors centre. The town centre provides an hotel, business centre with internet facilities, food shops, supermarket, wine store plus local art/craft shops. It has an impressive golf course whilst Christmas Cove offers excellent boat ramp and mooring facilities.
SeaShells Penneshaw comprises of two beach houses built on the third level at Hog Bay and overlooks Backstairs Passage to the north back to the mainland. To the south, SeaShells Penneshaw abuts the Karatta Conservation Park containing rare vegetation species plus its share of local visitors including blue wrens, various parrot species, magpies and wallabies.
Architect designed and completed in December 2005, the SeaShells Penneshaw buildings reflect the local historic character of neighbouring beach houses built over the last thirty years. The facilities are modern, comfortable with simple plan layouts, low pitched skillion roofs, horizontal metal ribbed cladding and feature selected windows with seashell motive lead light style glazing. Open planned living areas open to the outdoor decks via full width bi-folding doors. The tranquil setting is conducive for a relaxing stay in relatively close proximity to town facilities, the ferry terminal and subsequently, as a starting or finishing point to the attractions of the rest of Kangaroo Island.
